Brief History of the Course

Wilpshire Golf Club is rightly proud of being the oldest Golf Club in East Lancashire having been formed on 20th June 1890. Details of the original course are hard to come by but the course was increased to 18 holes in 1909. The 18 holes currently in use today, albeit with many additions and variations can trace their history back to 1919 when the club appointed a well known golf course architect Mr H.S Colt of Leeds to advise on the layout of the course.
In 1924, the club engaged the legendary James Braid to advise on certain improvements resulting in new greens on certain holes and re-routing others. Other changes and additions have taken place over the years but the course is essentially as it was in 1925 when it was played by members for the first time.

Wilpshire is a mix of parkland and classic moorland terrain with the characteristic tough moorland grasses interspersed with naturally occurring heather offering unparalleled views of the Ribble Valley.

Wilpshire Golf Club is a member of the Association of James Braid Courses.
